Secondhand Shopping Scores from The Big Apple

As a brief interlude between posts about the Manhattan Vintage Show, I thought I would show you a couple of things I purchased in New York.  Everything I brought home was purchased secondhand.
The Idiosyncratic Fashionistas introduced me to one of their favourite shopping destinations, a chain of consignment stores called Beacon's Closet.  Valerie and I spent a couple of hours browsing at the 13th Street store and I purchased two dresses and a skirt which set me back about $40.  All are rather form-fitting, which is not a silhouette I usually embrace these days, but I felt great in all three pieces.

I didn't see what the print on this dress actually was until I tried it on, and Valerie pointed out that there was a very large pentagram covering the torso.  By that point, I was enamored with the length and the shape, so the print was an afterthought.   I just won't be wearing it to any events that take place in a church.  The dress is from a brand called Disturbia, based in the UK, and is actually still available on their website. 

In an attempt to downplay the devil-worship vibe of the dress I paired it with a long cardigan and my red converse.  No one pointed at me and crossed themselves, so I guess it worked.

I found these never-worn Alegria brand shoes at the Housing Works Thrift Store in Chelsea for $15.  They have all the makings of fancy old lady shoes - rocker outsole, built-in arch support and wide foot bed, not to mention the combination of red patent and patterned brocade.

I found this 1970's haori with metallic accents at Noriko Miyamoto's booth at the Manhattan Vintage show. Miyamoto, a native of Osaka, deals in antique Japanese textiles, and I purchased a long red and black Japanese raincoat from her last year.   This year, I also scooped up a haori from the 1920's in a fabulous combination of orange, purple, teal, and gold, which you'll see on my blog in the future.  I wore this outfit to work today, along with my freshly cut and coloured hair.  My colleagues are obviously getting used to my frequent hair colour changes as no one batted an eye at my pink and orange fauxhawk.
